Introduction

The provision of justice to its citizens is the first and foremost responsibility of the state and thus one of the basic functions of the Government. The purpose of criminal justice system is to protect the poor and vulnerable and punish those guilty of committing crimes. The criminal justice system comprises of mainly three functions to achieve this objective:

  • Investigation
  • Prosecution
  • Adjudication

Prosecution occupies a critical position between investigation and adjudication. Without quality prosecution services, however good the quality of investigation and adjudication may be the criminal justice system will not be able to protect the weak and vulnerable, and bring persons to account for wrong doing. It also ensures that investigation and adjudication meet the standards prescribed by law. Quality prosecution is an essential aspect of an effective criminal justice system.
